Therapeutic Relationship/ Communication
I had 1:1 with one of my focused resident. The resident was sharing all the health conditions of his life. The resident was emotional and started crying. I responded to the resident with warmth, genuineness, and empathy. I believe if I respond to the residents with empathy, the residents will start building a positive relationship and I feel, as student social workers we need to respond empathically to what residents say. In this way residents are often able to continue discussing their problems at an increasingly introspective and accurate level without any prompting.
Tuesday
Ethical dilemma/ Professionalism/ Communication
Today I visited a resident who I engaged with and the resident offered me a chocolate and I found it hard to refuse as in my home country if our elder give us anything we should not refuse as it shows disrespect towards the elder. I had to be mindful of not making my resident feel bad and had to communicate clearly to my resident of why I am not allowed to take. I was in dilemma of whether to accept or not.
Wednesday
Empowerment Theory/ Person Centered/ Client Involvement/ Communication
Today I did beauty therapy with few of my residents and understood how important it is for looking and feeling your best and there is no age limit. When we look into the mirror it affects confidence. Residents did feel confident in themselves. I applied empowerment theory with the residents as the beauty therapy helped me to build confidence in the residents. Also, throughout the therapy, I engaged with the residents and asked them the choice of colour they want on their nails and this helped me to build an autonomy for residents.
Thursday
Client Involvement/ Person Centered/ Communication
I had 1:1 session with a resident and while engaging wit the resident I realized that resident love playing card games. I arranged the cards to play with the resident. The strength and capacities of the client being acknowledged and respected. The resident engaged well and seem to be happy as she was smiling and giggling throughout the game. I also applied personal centered approach here as the resident was good at playing card games.
