The Strands: 
One of the main strands in ADV3M is Creating and Presenting.  Within this strand, students will use proper filmmaking techniques, forms and styles as well as the creative process to develop, produce, and perform in film works.  These will be completed either individually or in groups (ensembles).  Several of your assignments in this course will incorporate the overall expectations from this strand.
 

The Task:
You are going to create a short film that incorporates and showcases the innovations of D.W. Griffith.  This film may be entirely new in terms of subject or may build upon the realistic film you created in the previous learning guide. Like the works of D.W. Griffith, editing for this film will be much more significant than that of your previous film. You will have many creative decisions to make regarding your use of narrative, cinematic language, mise en scene and music to enhance audience engagement.
 

Tips/Suggestions/Process
 
Formulate some questions to help organize your thoughts and direct your research.  Here are some questions you may consider:
 

• How did the developments and innovations of one filmmaker affect those after him?
• What did key film innovators contribute to the development of Classical Hollywood Style?
• What were the most commonly used film styles and genres during this era?  What are their characteristics?

The Final Product:
Your Classical Hollywood Style film must be created digitally and submitted in a finished video format such as a .wmv, .mp4, .mov.  Based on your technological abilities and knowledge, you should choose the method of filming and editing that is most appropriate for you.  Most students will choose to use their own phones, tablets and/or computers.  Your Classical Hollywood Style film assignment must contain:
 

• A story, either original or adapted (based on a text written by someone else)
• narrative (storytelling) innovations as pioneered by Griffith
• camera innovations as pioneered by Griffith
• editing innovations as pioneered by Griffith
• cinematographic innovations as pioneered by Griffith
• mise en scene innovations as pioneered by Griffith
• musical innovations as pioneered by Griffith
• Accompanying explanation (incorporated as text at the end of your film or as a separate written accompaniment) that details why you made the choices you did regarding your incorporation of Griffith-style narrative, camera, editing, cinematographic, mise en scene and musical innovations (1-2 pages)
