AIMS:
The purpose of this assignment is to enable students to investigate a relatively new alternative product/system that is currently utilised within the building and construction industry. Research and findings from web-based resources, case studies and other literature including knowledge gained from this course will be used to evaluate aspects of this product or system.
Discussion of the product or system will be based upon design, procurement of the product, economy and efficiency, product acceptance in terms of engineering capability and performance according to the National Construction Code.
The particular product and system will be selected for discussion and outlined in the Assessment Description.
 

Course Objectives:
Assessments are formulated to incorporate aspects of the Course Objectives within the scope of the assessments. Review the Course Objectives enabling embedment of these principles within the formulation of the assessment tasks.
CO1. To review and consolidate the process of domestic and commercial construction
CO2. To review the organisation of the construction industry and management and teamworking techniques of the construction process
CO3. To plan and implement the commercial practices involved in construction cost estimating and tendering within the building industry
CO4. To analyse the Acts, Regulation, Codes and Standards pertaining to the construction industry
CO5. To communicate effectively in oral, written and graphical formats incorporating relevant information

‘In the early 1990’s an innovative wood product known as Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) was introduced in Austria and Germany.  CLT is a wood panelling building system, that has the potential to be a “cost-competitive, wood-based solution that complements the existing light frame and heavy timber options”. CLT also has the potential to replace concrete, masonry, and steel in some applications.’

In reading this extract students are to research findings from resources as listed and analyse the product or system of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as utilised in Australia. Discussion may be related to both domestic and commercial applications.
A case study example may also be used to assist with the presentation. An example is given below however you may select your own example.

Relate the product /system to the National Construction Code (NCC) and the Building Surveyors’ perspective . Note that this is not a technical report so only general comments related to composition, engineering ability, and compliance to the code will be adequate.
Tasks to be researched and analysed will be up to students to locate findings either through media releases, internet medium, television, journal or newspaper releases and use reference from relevant texts and/or publications to compile the assessment report.
