Task detail:

This Assessment requires you to respond to the following case scenario. You are to identify ONE of the culturally unsafe care points within this scenario. Utilising the Bystander Intervention Framework, you are to create a 7 slide Power Point presentation. The Power Point presentation is to be submitted as the background for your voice-over as a recorded zoom that is no shorter than 5 minutes 30 seconds and no longer than 6 minutes. The four components of the Bystander Intervention Framework are to be the basis of the Power Point presentation.


Case study:

You are doing a clinical placement on a busy medical ward, and you are working with a Registered Nurse (RN). Both of you attend to Allan who has an existing spinal injury as the result of a motor vehicle accident 10 years ago and uses a wheelchair to mobilise. He is being admitted to the ward as he has an infected wound on his right leg requiring treatment. You witness the following situation between the RN and Allan who is accompanied by his husband, Mark. The RN assumes that Mark (husband) is Allan’s (patient) paid care giver and explains what is going to happen to Allan whilst facing Mark and ignoring Allan completely. The RN makes the following comment “Hello there – who do we have here today? Thanks for bringing Allan up – he looks like he might need some antibiotics for that leg. How long has it been sore for – do you know? I will just get his chart out and I’ll get you to answer some questions about Allan’s medical history if that’s OK? Have you worked with him for long?” Mark turns to the RN and states “you need to ask my husband those questions he is best answering them”. The RN appears a little flustered and states “oh yes of course”. After finishing off admitting Allan to the ward, you walk back to the nurse’s station with the RN. The RN turns to you and states “why would you want to be with someone in a wheelchair and especially another bloke?”.

Speak clearly in your voice-over for each slide that you will record as you talk about and answer the questions for each PowerPoint slide as background.
