You are commencing your shift as a student nurse (SN) in a medical ward. You have just received bedside clinical handover from the nurse finishing their shift. One of your allocated patients, Ms Lorelle George, 64 years of age, has been recovering from pneumonia for the past 3 days and has discontinued supportive nasal cannula oxygen therapy this morning. During the clinical handover, you have been informed that Lorelle is experiencing occasional episodes of disorientation and slight confusion, particularly with locating her bed, since the oxygen therapy has ceased. As you approach her, you see by her facial expression that she is visibly distressed. She looks at you and softly asks, “Excuse me, can you tell me where my nurse is and ask them to come and help me to my bed please. I can’t see them anywhere.” As you try to remind her you are her nurse, she pushes you away and raises her voice at you, telling you to leave her alone. She then calls out “nurse, nurse, help me.” At that moment, Lorelle’s partner arrives, asking what has happened on finding Lorelle so distressed and crying. He looks at you, stating loudly, “Who are you? What did you do to Lorelle? Why is she so upset?”
