1 Introduction

2.1 Background to Assignments 
Multinational enterprises (MNE’s) that have a great deal of success in their home country may find it is not that easy to replicate their successes in expanding operations to other locations around the globe. More specifically, expanding operations into transitioning market contexts. Hence, the central question asked in the module and “thread” that connects the three assignments is; what are the determinants of the success or failure of operating an MNE around the globe?

Scenario
The scenario presented is that you are currently completing an International Business module.
The management of the MNE have approached you to do research that is secondary and exploratory in nature and then write a report in which you accomplish the following objectives:

• Identify and evaluate the determinants of the success or failure of operating the MNE in the African context.
• Indicate the implications drawn from your evaluation for management action.
• Make recommendations for future management action based on the factual conclusions you have drawn.
• Provide justification, meaning sound bases, for the recommendations made.

Rules applicable to all three assignments

• All three assignments must submitted as individual work and NOT as group effort.
• You must choose only one MNE that operates in the African context.
• The host country of operations must be an African country.
• Do NOT create a fictitious MNE, as you will have to provide real world “evidence” in writing up your report.
• To delimit the scope of your search and reduce the complexity of your search for information pick only ONE host African country.

You must make use of secondary sources of information. This may include, but not limited to annual reports, industry reports, institutional reports, articles published in reputable sources, and articles scholarly in nature.

• You will NOT be doing any form of primary research and data collection (in other words, you will not be collecting any data via instruments such as surveys or interviews) as part of the process of doing your “homework”.

4 Preparation work required

• You must read as widely and extensively as possible. Start with the required chapter readings in your textbook and the required article readings in each of the study units.
• Work also through the case studies and the group activities (based on the integrated case study) in each of study units to develop insight into how the two main theoretical perspectives connect to the central question asked in the three assignments.
• Once you have done the required readings and engaged in the study unit activities, then you can start to search for secondary sources of information.
• Note, when you undertake your search, it is important to contextualise the search terms used.
• Note, context is essential to explain what international businesses do. Both the theory and contextualisation are important in completing the assignments.
• When searching for information add search terms to narrow your field of search (and take note of the search terms you have used). For example, start with terms such as “International Business in Africa”, or terms that narrow your search to the institutions of a country, issues or debates around international trade in Africa, country attractiveness ratings, trends in trade in Africa, reports on doing business in Africa and
• transparency reports. Note you will have to decide the number of search terms you will use as you expand search for each of the assignments.
