Theoretical perspectives:
Various theories exist that explain and identify the role[s] of anxiety and how/why athletes’ performance can be disrupted or enhanced through their experience of it. Here, you should seek to compare/contrast (at least) TWO key theoretical perspectives and relevant sports-psychology based literature before critically evaluating the theoretical basis and/or legitimacy for anxiety being deemed beneficial to sport performance. Note: Throughout these discussions, you should also seek to integrate knowledge of at least one other sport psychology construct (e.g., commitment, motivation, team cohesion) covered throughout this module and how anxiety may interact with it. You are encouraged to consider short- and long-term experiences of sport anxiety.
Managing anxiety:
Broadly speaking, it is advisable that athletes gain more control, or build psychological resources for themselves, the sport situation and/or the specific symptoms (Hanton & Mellalieu, 2006). Critically examine the strategies used to manage anxiety in sport (you should present at least two different strategies), as well as how research into basic/advanced psychological strategies might support – or not – the view that anxiety is facilitative to performance.
