Hi, my name is Marnie Nelson, and I’m currently in my final year of Bachelor of Nursing. In this short video presentation, I will be providing an example from my clinical placement demonstrating how I have developed the communication and teamwork skills that are required of a professional nurse. Communication is fundamental in every aspect of patient care. It has taught me that communication in healthcare settings underpins everything a professional nurse can do to provide safe, high-quality care that the patients receive. 

During my sub-acute clinical placement at a private rehabilitation centre, I was required to demonstrate my ability to communicate effectively with patients, nursing staff and other healthcare team professionals both verbally and in writing. The actions that I took while on my placements were, before entering the room, I made sure to knock and introduce myself and gain consent. I explain to the patient the procedure when obtaining vital signs. If there are abnormal findings or I am unsure, I immediately inform my preceptor. Aside from ensuring I recorded the findings accurately and promptly. When I speak with patients, I respect their right to privacy and confidentiality. This ensures the optimal participation of the patients. As a result, I constantly learned and practised my communication skills while interacting with a wider range of patients. I established and built rapport with each new patient and nursing staff. I provided, educated, empowered, and understood the patients’ care needs during the rehabilitation process. In addition, I was able to participate in clinical handover at the patient’s bedside, and I have received positive feedback from my preceptors. 

Teamwork is crucial to providing effective delivery of service to the patient. During my time on clinical placement at a reputable hospital, I was required to demonstrate my ability to work effectively in a team environment continually. I took action to show my willingness to assist and support team members where necessary and work within my scope of practice. I observed and participated in a multidisciplinary team meeting, worked with various healthcare professionals such as physiotherapists and visiting medical officers, and participated in ward rounds with my preceptor. I ensure that I show my eagerness to learn and be proactive. While on placement, I was required to share patient progress information with the visiting medical officer regarding a particular patient. As a result, of my teamwork skills and collaborative work efforts, I have developed confidence in helping the team deliver a high standard of care to the patients. I accepted and adapted to the various working styles of team members.
