Managing in Asia – Take-home Assignment
- Please choose ONE of the two questions to write your essay on. Your essay needs to be 1,000 words (+10% allowed if necessary) and submitted to CANVAS by Friday 15th October at 1pm. Tables and figures (if applicable) are included in the word count, but references will not count against the word count. Please mention the word count, along with your name and student number in the footer of your essay.
- It is important that your essay has a logical flow and good structure. Make good use of appropriate subheadings, write in coherent and integrated paragraphs, and avoid grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Please support your analysis by using the articles covered, class discussions, presentation slides, and references from outside (as necessary).
- It is not necessary to conduct additional research to answer the questions, but it is important to draw on the subject contents (i.e., cases, articles, lectures and class discussions) and provide clear arguments/examples to support your analysis. Generation of novel insights based on your personal understanding of the subject contents and critical reflection are also important for a well-crafted essay.
- Question option 1:
- Discuss the ethical concerns/challenges related to Asian entertainment companies, such as YG (and others discussed in the case) and recommend actions they can take.
- While the following list is not exhaustive, your response should address points such as:
- Effect of the company’s operations on employees and customers, both current and potential
- Effect of the company’s operations on the environment
- Effect of the company on society at large
- In preparing your answer to the above question, draw on the articles, theoretical concepts, and cases we discussed related to ethics.
- Question option 2:
- Discuss how managing in Asia is different from managing in a non-Asian/Western country and develop a few recommendations for a non-Asian/Western manager to manage in Asia.
- While the following list is not exhaustive, your response should address points such as:
- Effect of business environment (e.g., institutions) on company operations and stakeholders
- Effect of historical trajectories (e.g., colonialism, conflict, income levels) on people and thus, companies operating in Asia
- Effect of increased exposure to and integration with businesses and societies outside Asia.
- In preparing your answer to the above question, draw on the articles, theoretical concepts, and cases we discussed.

- Appropriate use of case examples
- Structure, style and presentation
- Frequently asked questions:
- What formatting is required?
- Please make use of 2.5cm page margins, 1.5 line spacing, 12-pt Times New Roman or Calibri and appropriate subheadings.
- Is external research required?
- Feel free to conduct external research to strengthen your arguments and make sure these are referenced appropriately in APA citation style. There is not a minimum requirement for the number of references and grading of the assignment will be based on the overall quality of analysis.
- Is the exam open-book?
- Yes. This means that you are welcome to refer to any material we covered in the subject. Additionally, you may use relevant external resources, such as published research articles or industry reports. You are not, however, permitted to communicate with others to prepare responses or to search for relevant material. All necessary studying and research should be conducted by you alone. Any violation of this rule will invite appropriate action as per the university guidelines.
- Do I need to reference seminar slides, the cases, or readings?
- You do not need to reference the seminar slides or the cases. When you refer to a theory, concept, framework or model from the readings, make use of in-text citations and include these in the reference list.
- It is important to clearly cite all reference sources when you draw on data, information, text, description, or any content that is not your own. Try to paraphrase as much as possible instead of using direct quotes from other sources (including slides, cases, readings, and external sources). If direct quotes must be used, make sure that these are referenced appropriately in APA citation style. Always paraphrase when you refer to seminar slides or cases. Refer to the University’s instructions and guidelines on academic integrity to avoid plagiarism:
