Sweet Things Ltd is a family run business producing traditional sweets for the UK and European markets. Due to an increase in demand, they advertise for enthusiastic young workers with relevant experience to join the existing team. Applications should be delivered in person during office hours and the covering letter should be hand-written.
Bertie is 18 and responds to the advertisement. He is interviewed by Janet, who immediately employs him as she knows his parents and knows him to be trustworthy. He is immediately given the use of a company vehicle.
Violetta’s application is refused on the basis of her Spanish parentage, despite previous experience in the industry. The company arrange guided tours around their factory and they feel that Violetta is not in keeping with the image of Sweet Things Ltd as a traditional British sweet manufacturer.
Mary ‘looks good on paper’ but has not complied with the hand-written covering letter requirement as she states that she has ‘poor handwriting at the moment due to a ‘sprained wrist’. This is overlooked until she is asked to complete an evaluation form after her interview. Anna tells Michael that Mary can ‘barely string a sentence together’ on paper and is therefore unemployable.
Another applicant, Beverly, states on her application that she has eight years’ experience in the confectionery trade. She is hired but is fired two months later after she questions company policy regarding her lack of company car. The company state that her dismissal is not related to this, but in response to a rumour that she is pregnant. As the company is a small family-run business, they cannot afford to have workers away from the firm for lengthy periods due to production deadlines.
Danny is taken on but told that he must either remove his earring or cover it up with a blue plaster. He covers it up initially but, after a while, can’t be bothered and turns up for work with the earring exposed. One of his co-workers starts taunting him with homophobic remarks and complains to management that he doesn’t like working with ‘poofters’.
Les is 62 and applies to sign up for a course on the latest techniques in confectionery manufacture. He is turned down for the training course as it is thought that he will not have much time after training before he is due to retire. The company feels that it would be a waste of their resources.
Kelly is recruited but announces on Saturday that she is unwilling to work on Sundays until at least 1.00 pm as she will need to get changed after attending church. Caroline reluctantly agrees to cover the first part of Kelly’s Sunday shift on a temporary basis. Kelly subsequently discovers that Caroline is being paid more per hour than her when some payslips are inadvertently left out in the staff room.
Due to a previous motoring accident, Robert has one leg slightly shorter than the other and finds standing for long periods on the production line tiring and painful. He requests a chair but is told that this is not possible as it will block the emergency exits and put other workers in danger. Robert complains to a company director who tells him that it is not his problem: health and safety policy is dealt with by the personnel department over which he has no control.
At the end of each month, if the company has made an increased profit, they allow all married workers to take a box of sweets home for their families, whether they have children or not. Objections are raised to this policy by single mum Susan and by Carl and his partner Terry.
