Assignment Task
Task
KA1 Demonstrates deep and broad knowledge and understanding of a range of chemical concepts.
KA3 Critically explores and understands in depth the interaction between science and society.
KA4 Communicates knowledge and understanding of chemistry coherently, with highly effective use of appropriate terms, conventions, and representations.
Due in 24 hrs
In this task you will investigate a contemporary example of how science interacts with society. Your investigation will focus on one or more of the key concepts of Science as a Human Endeavour. These concepts, with elaborations that are neither comprehensive nor exclusive, in the study of Chemistry are listed below.
Communication and Collaboration
Science is a global enterprise that relies on clear communication, international conventions, and review and verification of results.
Collaboration between scientists, governments, and other agencies is often required in scientific research and enterprise.
Development
Development of complex scientific models and/or theories often requires a wide range of evidence from many sources and across disciplines.
New technologies improve the efficiency of scientific procedures and data collection and analysis. This can reveal new evidence that may modify or replace models, theories, and processes.
Application and Limitation
Scientific knowledge, understanding, and inquiry can enable scientists to develop solutions, make discoveries, design action for sustainability, evaluate economic, social, cultural, and environmental impacts, offer valid explanations, and make reliable predictions.
The use of scientific knowledge may have beneficial or unexpected consequences; this requires monitoring, assessment, and evaluation of risk and provides opportunities for innovation.
Science informs public debate and is in turn influenced by public debate; at times, there may be complex, unanticipated variables or insufficient data that may limit possible conclusions.
The Task
You may choose to explore any contemporary chemistry technology that is linked to a topic. Some potential ideas are listed below.
Global Warming and Climate Change
Select and explore a recent discovery, innovation, issue or advancement linked to monitoring or mitigating climate change.
Examples include:
Tracking and predicting climate change
Developing new technologies used to improve climate change models.
Methods to reduce CO2 emissions, or remove CO2 from the atmosphere. This could include, but is not limited to, biofuels, fuel or flow cells,
Monitoring or mitigating the impact of soot on the environment
Prepare a 1500 word scientific report using correct scientific terminology. Include the following components based on the focus of your investigation:
Topic : newly developed fuelgems reducing the harmful Co2 from air. Look at articles to talk about it in the she concepts.
An introduction to identify the key concept(s) of Science as a Human Endeavour (~100 words);
Relevant chemistry concepts or background (~400 words);
An explanation of at least one of the following SHE concepts: Communication and Collaboration, (~600 words);
A discussion of the potential Application and Limitations e.g economic impact, intrinsic interest, environmental implications, effect on quality of life and need for further development (~250 words)
A conclusion that summarises the connection between your focus and the key concept(s) of Science as a Human Endeavour (~150 words);
Citations and referencing.
Reference list and internal referencing
Your list of references (sources referred to in text of your report) should be included at the end of your report. It is highly recommended you use the References tool in Microsoft Word (Style: APA or Harvard)
An example of a reference list entry is as follows:
Bloggs, J. (2013, November 21). Reference List Examples. Retrieved April 1, 2014, from www.example.com: www.example.com/references.htmlYou will be assessed on the appropriateness of the sources from which you have gathered your information. The use of poor quality sources will be penalised.
When researching this information you should use a variety of appropriate websites. Part of the assessment for the reference list will come from your use of an appropriate range of sources. Some examples include:
Online newspapers;
Online magazines;
Corporation sites (e.g. Hewlett-Packard);
Organisation sites (e.g. Greenpeace);
Government sites.
Example C grade : Newly Developed Electro Swing Battery Captures Carbon Dioxide from The Atmosphere
INTRODUCTION:
Through current society, climate change is occurring due to the excess emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere through anthropogenic sources. Anthropogenic sources refers to the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere from human causes such as the combustion of fossil fuels to generate electricity and heat. This results in researchers and scientistic to develop new methods and technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emission. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers have developed a new battery model (electro swing battery), in which it can remove carbon dioxide from the air (atmosphere) CITATION Ari19 \l 3081 (Cohen, 2019). Throughout this report, the chemistry background of climate change, the development of electro swing battery, and the application and limitation of the device on climate change and economy will be discussed.
CHEMISTRY BACKGROUND:
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the primary greenhouse gases emitted from anthropogenic sources such as the combustion of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels such as coal, contains carbon (C), and natural gases, contains methane (CH4) are combusted to often produce electrical energy or heat. When carbon is released, it reacts with the oxygen in the air to produce carbon dioxide, as seen in Equation 1.

Complete combustion is the reaction between hydrocarbon fuels with oxygen, resulting in the only products of carbon dioxide and water, as seen in both Equation 2 and Equation 3. When complete combustion takes place, the number of moles of oxygen (O2) is enough to convert all carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon into carbon dioxide
Equation 2: Complete Combustion of Gasoline2C8H18+25O2?16CO2+18H2OEquation 3:Complete Combustion of MethaneCH4+2O2?CO2+2H2OThe Sun emits many wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, in the form of visible light and ultraviolet radiation (UV). These electromagnetic radiations enter the Earth’s atmosphere in which molecules absorb the energy. When the atoms are heated from these radiations, they emit them in the form of infrared radiation into the interplanetary space. However, some infrared radiation is absorbed by greenhouse gases in the troposphere, as seen in Figure 1. The energised greenhouse gases then re-emit the infrared radiation back into all directions, as seen in Figure 2. However, some infrared radiation is emitted in the direction of the earth, warming and maintaining the temperature to support life. This is known as the greenhouse effect. Due to an increase of carbon dioxide, the temperature anomaly of the earth has increases at an increasing rate within the last century through anthropogenic influence (human influence) and natural influence (no human influence) as seen in Figure 3.
