David is an 18 year old who has previously been a person using your service. He has come into the agency today in what appears to be a very depressed state. Gentle questioning confirms that David feels totally lacking in any motivation, has not been able to get out of bed and has “dragged” himself there that morning knowing he needs help. Further questioning reveals that “David” has injected speed a couple of days earlier. This is something that he has not done for some time and it is now causing him to feel guilty and remorseful. He also reveals that these incidences of self-harming behaviour have increased in frequency recently.

From previous interactions with this young person, you are aware that he has recently arrived in Queensland from interstate and has experienced considerable disruption to his friendship and social networks through constant moving from one location to the next, including living in a succession of youth refuges. He is currently staying in temporary accommodation at local backpackers. The uncertainty this is causing him through changes in residence is exacerbated by underlying issues of childhood sexual abuse and a history of family conflict.

1.
a) What communication style would you use in your interactions with David?

b) Why do you consider this communication style would be effective and appropriate for David?

2. How would you establish a trusting and respectful relationship with David while defining and maintaining professional boundaries?

3. What factors would you need to consider in evaluating the personal safety of David and ensuring that these requirements are met?

4.
a) How would you support David to deal with and identify potential solutions to the range of complex issues raised?

b) What services and personnel would be appropriate for referral and support?

Case study 2 – DIANNE

Dianne is a young, somewhat sheltered Aboriginal woman aged 20 years of age. Five weeks ago, she left the remote Indigenous community where she lives because of increasing incidences of family violence. Since then, she has been staying with relatives in a property leased from an Aboriginal Housing Cooperative in a nearby regional town. This house is now severely overcrowded and the situation is creating tension amongst members of the household, as well as conflict with the neighbours due to complaints about noise disturbance. Dianne is starting to stay away from the home overnight and is spending increasing time in the local hotel with a group of unemployed men who are much older than her.

1. What communication techniques would you use to engage with Dianne in a way that reflects cultural sensitive practice?

2. What factors would you need to consider in evaluating the personal safety of Dianne and in ensuring that these requirements are met?

3. In working with Dianne to assess issues impacting on her homeless situation, what measures would you consider appropriate to take to resolve conflict and inter-personal differences?

4.
a) How would you advocate on behalf of Dianne?

b) How could you negotiate and create access pathways with support services and a range of social and private housing providers for Dianne?

Case study 3 – BOB

Bob is an 18 year old man with a physical disability resulting from a farm accident. He is originally from a rural Queensland town. He has moved to Brisbane and is currently living in a private boarding house in an inner city suburb. He has just been told that he must vacate the premises due to the fact that the boarding house is being closed. Bo is very distressed by this news as he has just been starting to feel as though he is ‘finding his way’ in the city and has made a number of friends and acquaintances. He is frightened of the change that is happening in his life and does not want to be separated from the people who he depends on for support, assistance and companionship.

1. How would you communicate with Bob respectfully and in a manner that builds trust?

2. What factors may you have to take into consideration in recognising the communication needs of Bob?

3. How could you support Bob to advocate and/or negotiate on his own behalf in a way that reflects age-appropriate practice?

4.
a) What support services and range of private and social housing providers would be suitable for referral for Bob?

b) How would you support Bob to access these?

Case study 4 – FATIMA

Fatima is a young Muslim woman (17 years of age) originally from Afghanistan. Fatima and her family have spent the past ten years living in a displaced person’s camp in Pakistan waiting for their application for refugee status to be processed. In their country of origin, Afghanistan, Fatima and her family were subjected to severe persecution due to the fact that they belonged to an ethnic minority group called Hazara.

Three of Fatima’s siblings were born in the camp. Two years ago her parents were killed in the armed conflict that engulfed their country. Fatima is now an orphan.
She has recently arrived in Australia with her siblings after having finally being granted refugee status through the humanitarian entrant category.

For the past 10 weeks Fatima and her siblings have been living in emergency housing provided by a community organisation supported by volunteer staff. They are only able to remain in this accommodation for another three weeks. Fatima has been attempting to find out how to rent a property through a real estate agent or private landlord, but so far has not had any success. One reason for the difficulty encountered by Fatima may be due to discrimination and her inability to locate consistent work in retail.

1. How would you adapt your style of communication and language to accommodate different cultural values and practices when interacting with Fatima?

2. How might your own ethnicity and religion, class and gender affect your interactions with Fatima and her siblings?

3. As highlighted in the case scenario, Fatima has been subjected to persecution, deprivation and hardship and has experienced loss and displacement.

a) What are some of the indicators of trauma that may be exhibited by Fatima?

b) What services and personnel would you consider appropriate to refer Fatima to?
