The is a blended module. Blended simple means engagement between students and lecturers will happen, across two modalities, online, and offline. The blended mode also means that you have access to printed and online material. The printed material in this module include Tutorial Letter 101, Tutorial Letter 501, prescribed textbooks and other printed materials to which you may be referred. On the other hand, online material refers to all the electronic material that is used in the module such as online Tutorial Letter 101, Tutorial Letter 501, etutoring, discussion forums, virtual class presentations, among others.The module content was developed in close alignment with the relevant CAPS documents. The content learnt and the skills acquired in this module are thus appropriate in terms of equipping teachers to specifically teach the Foundation and Intermediate Phases. Although the material is closely aligned to CAPS outcomes and requirements, the content and skills are general and would meet the needs of any student interested in furthering their knowledge and skills of English Studies. This module adopts an integrated and multimodal approach in the usage of language systems, literature and visuals in order to develop your analytical, critical reading and writing skills. As this is an Applied English Language Studies module, emphasis will be on development of disciplinary content knowledge and the application thereof in analysing a variety of literary, non-literary, visual texts.
2.1 Purpose
This module intends to promote multilingualism and intercultural communication in English as a First Additional Language. This module will provide qualifying graduates with levels of language proficiency that meet the threshold levels necessary for effective learning across the curriculum.
The module aims to:
- adopt an integrated approach in the use of language systems, literature and visuals to promote analytical skills.
- advance and integrate the students’ foundational knowledge of and skills in language and literature to conceptualise the process of critical text analysis.
- develop the students’ skills in interpreting how linguistic features, literary devices, visuals and structure influence meaning and purpose in a wide range of texts.
- promote the use of selective and critical reading strategies of different literary and non-literary genres as prompts to develop critical writing skills.
- advance the students’ ability to write logical and coherent text analysis by implementing the three phases of the writing process.
- enhance the students’ proficiency and pragmatic competence in the use and variation of the English language in different real-life contexts and domains.
