Aim: Materials for piston rings of a car 

Details:
You are working as a Mechanical/Materials Engineer in a company and are asked to find and suggest a suitable material (and coating/treatment if required) for manufacturing piston rings (compression and oil rings) of a typical 4-cylinder car with a four-stroke petrol engine, and 2 litres of cylinder capacity. The company expects you to consider material/manufacturing costs as well as durability of the rings. They also want you to prepare a detailed report for the subsequent manufacturing step.

Your investigation may include:

•  An introduction to piston rings (types, functionality, design considerations, etc)
•  Issues/concerns with piston rings (e.g. wear)
•  A detailed study on the materials that are commonly used for compression and oil rings for cars with the same specifications. Discuss about the technical reasons to use those materials. You may want to include also new/advanced materials or technology that have been used for manufacturing piston rings.
•  Investigate, justify and select your material(s) for the above project. Detail surface coatings and/or treatment (if any) that you would like to use.

Please note that:

• Your investigation can, of course, include some other relevant/useful items in addition to those suggested above.
• Your report should not be less than 3,000 words (excluding references and figure captions).
• This is an engineering report, thus, your report should be strongly technical and scientific and should present in-depth details, figures (e.g. graphs, diagrams), tables, information, discussion, calculations (where appropriate) throughout the report.
• Proper referencing must be used.
• The report should have a proper structure with sections and subsections (if necessary) including Title, Names, Abstract, Body, Summary and References.
