However, a greater proportion of Indigenous people live in rural and remote areas in comparison to non-Indigenous Australians and most of them are either younger (14years and below) or elderly (65years and above) (AIHW, 2018a). Older Indigenous Australians living in rural and remote areas have poor health and a high chronic illness rate (AIHW, 2018a). This paper comprises the literature review on the health status of elderly Indigenous Australians living in rural and remote areas and the impact of social determinants like limited health service access and health literacy on their health status. Lastly, the health impact of the interaction of chosen social determinants with each other will be discussed.

Conclusion:

Elderly Indigenous Australians living in rural and remote areas account for a higher number of residents in comparison to non-Indigenous Australians. The health status of older Indigenous Australians living in such areas has poor health and has a higher risk of chronic illness. The behavioural habits, limited access to the services, lower health literacy, employment opportunity, lack of professional specialists and lower SES are the social determinants of health that has impact health outcome of the population group.

There is a complex interplay between social factors like education, income, job status, and health status of an individual and vice-versa. The limited access to facilities is associated with lower health literacy as people do not want to travel a long distance and expensive transportation charges. The people then become unaware of the facilities available and are unknown about the source of information and help
