Allelopathy: Effects of Volatiles from Crushed Plant Materials on Seed Germination and Growth
Evolution has an extraordinary influence on the form and function of organisms, and a major part of evolutionary fitness is the ability to compete for resources with other organisms. Plants compete with other plants for nutrients, space, and light. Given that plants are immotile (they cannot get up and walk around), one strategy for competition among plants is allelopathy—the production and release of volatile chemicals that can slow the growth of other plants (Rice, 1984).
Consider the distinct odor released by crushed garlic (Allium sativum) and the tearing of the eyes associated with cutting an onion (Allium cepa). These are caused by volatiles, chemicals that evaporate into the air. What might be the purpose of volatiles released by A. sativum and A. cepa? Might they have positive (helpful), negative (harmful), or neutral (no effect) effects on other plants? Do they affect all plants in the same way? How long do the effects last? Do you other plants that produce odors (e.g., broccoli, oranges, carrots) have similar effects?
2. Identify a specific, testable scientific question related to allelopathy that is narrow enough in scope to focus on the effects of a single independent variable. Because you will be designing a scientific experiment in an effort to answer this question, it is recommended that you keep your question simple, but creativity is encouraged
