- This unit applies to any community services worker involved in crisis intervention. Management of the crisis may involve face-to-face, telephone or remote contact with persons involved.
- The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.
- Pre-requisites Not Applicable
- What do I need to do to be deemed competent? To be deemed competent in this unit you must be able to provide evidence that you can:
- Identify imminent crisis situations
- Address immediate safety concerns
- Provide referral for crisis intervention support
- Care for self
- There must be evidence that the candidate has:
- been involved in crisis intervention activities on at least 3 occasions
- This unit is ungraded. Your final result will be recorded as competency achieved (AC) or competency not achieved (NC)You will be given an outline of assessment tasks and due dates for each assessment event.

- Maggie is a 35 year old Aboriginal woman. Maggie is in a domestic violence relationship with her partner, Damon, since the birth of their child, Annie, 6 years ago. Last night Damon found out that Maggie had made a safety plan and he threatened to kill her and Annie. Maggie is terrified today and doesn’t know what to do and has come to see you for help.
- Maggie is a stay at home mother. She was an accounts manager prior to Annie’s birth. The family is struggling due to financial difficulties and alcohol use by both parents. Maggie also experiences low moods, anxiety, and lack of self-worth, and she tells you she feels that she is a bad mother and wife.
- Maggie excuses Damon’s violence and says that he is a “Good man” and “she makes him hit her”.
- Maggie was bought up with a father that used physical punishment to discipline her and she believes it is the only way to learn. Maggie also states that she relives her past every day with her husband, has vivid nightmares, and is unable to sleep.
- When talking to Maggie you notice that she lacks eye contact and cries. Maggie has not had contact with her family or culture in the past 6 years and feels disconnected. Maggie’s has set up her safety plan which includes leaving a bag at the neighbours.

- Chris’s story (Case study 1)
- Chris is on his regular visit today and he has told you that he is thinking about ending his life because he is not coping anymore. He has previously told you he has a gun and bullets because he is a member of his local gun clubChris is 31 year old and has just returned from two tours of combat in Iraq. Chris is married to Stacey and they have three children – Ella 9, Robert 7 and Krystelle 2. Chris has been discharged from the armed forces and has been working in an office for the past 2 years.Chris has panic attacks. Chris has been meeting with you as he lacks motivation and often feels angry. You have been working with him on strategies to manage stress and anxiety. Chris cries constantly through the session and lacks eye contact, but is able to express his emotional distress of the situation, but tends to get frustrated and angry.
- Chris has stated to you that he has not attempted to commit suicide but he often thinks of it. He has felt very low and feels “life is not worth living like this”.Judith’s story (Case study 2)Judith is experiencing a lot of stress at work and believes everyone is out to hurt her and constantly has dramas with others. Judith in her meeting today has disclosed to you that she is not coping and is worried that she is going to be sacked. Yesterday afternoon she was a given a written warning about her performance. Judith is the sole income earner and behind in her rent. She is fearful that she will lose her job, her income and be evicted. She tells you that she feels like running away.Judith is a 31 year old, mother of 2 children Bessie 11 and Todd 10. Judith’s relationship with Bessie and Todd’s father, Jason, ended 9 years previously. He has no contact. Judith suffered severe post-natal depression after Todd was born. She received psychiatric care at the time but has not been on medication or seeing anyone for this for the past 7 years. She is worried that the depression is returning and that if it does she will not be able to go on.
