The laboratory report should cover the practical content of the three day residential school, however students will be expected to read around the subject area and demonstrate work of a level 7 (Masters) standard. After a brief introduction in which you should discuss common methods used to diagnose haemochromatosis, your laboratory report should be split into sections covering each of the methods you have used over the three days.

Compare these methods and discuss the advantages and limitations of each. Discuss likely sources of variation in respect of sensitivity, accuracy and precision. You should also consider other methods that may be used to measure ferritin, such as clinical chemistry analyzers.

For the genotyping experiments you should give the detected genotypes of your three samples and give details of the underlying principles of the Taqman assay you have performed. You should also discuss alternative methods of SNP genotyping and the benefits and drawback of each method.
Conclude your report by giving your preferred methods and technological platforms for the diagnosis of haemochromatosis and explain why you have opted for these particular methods. The marking scheme for the laboratory report will follow the criteria given in the course handbook.

Poster Presentation 
The subject of your poster should be one topic studied during the directed engagement weeks (e.g. flow cytometry, POCT, microscopy, or cell culture, etc.), rather than a technique covered during the residential school. You should write a poster detailing both the technical basis of your chosen subject and its uses as an investigative tool. You might like to discuss what advances or unique insights does this technique offer over other methods? How has it improved the diagnosis and management of disease? How are the latest technical advances in the area likely to impact upon and change current practice?

You should also include a 1 page written synopsis of your poster, justifying why you selected that particular topic.
