Case Study – Sam
Sam is a 28-year-old man with Down Syndrome. He has worked in the recycling yard of a local Australian Disability Enterprise for 3 years. Prior to commencing this job, Sam had tried a few different jobs since he left school at the end of Year 10. His previous jobs in open employment situations had been sourced through Disability Employment Services. Sam had found these difficult to maintain when the extra assistance from his support worker was withdrawn once it was believed he had settled into the workplace. Sam had felt uncomfortable in those jobs, as he sometimes had difficulty with communication and many of his work colleagues had come from different countries and spoke little English. He also thought some of the people he had worked with might have been making fun of him at times. Working at the recycling yard for such a long time had given Sam more confidence and a sense of security. He liked earning an income and was still able to receive able to receive the Disability Support Pension.
Sam had recently commenced a romantic relationship with Shelley who did filing and a few other tasks around the office of the recycling yard. Shelley had started work in the office about 6 weeks ago. Sam met her at the canteen when they both had the same lunch break. Shelley is 25 and has Down Syndrome. She doesn’t work the same number of hours as Sam, and also receives the Disability Support Pension. Unlike Sam, Shelley finished school, although she had attended a Special Development School rather than a mainstream school like Sam.
Both Sam and Shelley live at home with their families, however they have been talking about moving into a place together. Shelley’s sister Beth had reminded Shelley about the difference between private and public places and making sure to use appropriate behaviour in each place when Shelley told Beth about her boyfriend Sam. Shelley was very keen on the idea of her and Sam moving to a place of their own. Sam had been thinking it was time he lived more independently of his parents but was worried about how much rent and bills might cost. He had heard other people talking about how hard it was to find affordable places to rent. He hoped that with what he and Shelley earned and their combined Disability Support Pension, they would have enough. As neither he or Shelley had a driver’s licence, they would have to find somewhere to live that was close to a bus stop, so they could get to work and do their shopping.
Shelley told her sister Beth that she and Sam would like to start their own family. Beth suggested that maybe Shelley and Sam should go visit Shelley’s GP to talk about this. Beth was aware that women with Down Syndrome were more likely to have a child with Down Syndrome and that men with Down Syndrome usually have a lower overall fertility rate than other men. She also suggested that perhaps Shelley and Sam might want to think about learning what it is like to live together as just the two of them, as a baby changes life forever need a lot of care and equipment to take care of properly. Beth thought that it might be better for Shelley to discuss contraception with the GP. Beth said that once Shelley and Sam were comfortable and confident in the life they planned to build together, maybe they could then think about babies. Sam thought that this was a good idea, as he was still worried about finding a place they could afford to rent
