Bianca and Steven are brother and sister.

As the older sibling, Bianca was closely supervised during childhood by her and Steven’s parents. If she misbehaved, she was appropriately disciplined.

Recently, though, Bianca has started to get into some trouble. She has been skipping school, shoplifting, and engaging in underage drinking. These activities give her a thrill and she feels she is unlikely to get caught. Bianca says she does not care for the opinions of her teachers and is not motivated to go to school or to perform well academically. She says that ‘rules are there to be broken’.

Outside of school, Bianca has a close group of friends. With these friends, Bianca is involved in many extra-curricular activities, including dance and tennis.

Steven has also been getting into trouble lately, engaging in acts of graffiti and other forms of property damage, as well as minor forms of theft. Steven’s friends have shown him how to steal without getting caught and praise him when he succeeds in stealing items from other kids at school.

As a young child, Steven’s behaviour was not as closely monitored as his sister’s. His mother had returned to work when Steven was young and often did not realise that Steven was behaving badly.

Feeling that Steven would grow out of bad behaviour, neither of his parents would tend to address instances where Steven was naughty as a child.

TASK:

a. Explain why Bianca is engaging in delinquent & criminal behaviours with reference of the Rational Choice Theory; and

b. Explain why Steven is engaging in delinquent & criminal behaviours with reference to the Differential Association Theory.
