Energy Transformations and Work:

The car setup claims a horsepower of between 1700 – 2145 hp.

The mass of the car is 1650kg.

1. Based on what we see in the video how can you tell that work is being done on the car? Base your answer on the definition of work, W = ?E or W = Fd. (note: it is not enough to state that there is a “force acting over a distance”. You must discuss how you know that a force is present)

2. Discuss the energy transformations that occur in order to get this car up to speed. Be sure to describe any energy forms that would be considered as “losses” in terms of the final output of the car.

3. What form of energy is the car achieving as it accelerates? Ep or Ek (circle one)

4. How is power, P, defined in terms of work, W, or change in energy, ?E?

8. Look up the horsepower of your or your families car and record below:

– Make of car:

– Horsepower:

9. How times bigger is the horsepower of the Mitsubishi in the video compared to your car above?

10. Does your horsepower calculated above agree with the values stated by the video (at the beginning)?

11. The quoted maximum power rating of 2145hp was achieved under “ideal” conditions. Assuming that the conditions are less than “ideal” in the video, discuss two ways that one could improve upon this Power test. Be sure to state why this would be an improvement in terms of physics.

Part 2: Mastery

1. Determine the power of any battery, spring, or elastic operated toy. You must design the experiment and collect your data. You will be graded on the design of your experiment, the way that you collect data, and the validity of the scientific methods and principles used.

Be sure to include:

A description of your toy (photo if possible)

  • A diagram of your experiment with any variables used in calculations labelled.
  • Procedure used to collect data
  • A simple data table
  • Calculations
  • Conversion from Watts, W, into horsepower, Hp

Part 3:

1. Let’s imagine we are examining the efficiency of an elevator traveling from the ground floor to the top floor. We need to determine both output and input values be able to complete the calculations above.

a. In terms of energy, what is the ultimate purpose of an elevator? In other words, ideally, the work done by the elevator goes into increasing its overall energy.

b. Where does the input energy come from? What type of energy is being transformed to lift the elevator in the first place?

c. Why is impossible for the elevator to be 100?ficient? What other, less useful, types of energy are being produced as the elevator climbs?

d. If you knew the power rating of the elevator’s lift motor, how could you use this to determine the input energy? Discuss what other data might be required?

2. Design an experiment to determine the efficiency of the toy used in Part 2. If the toy in Part 2 is difficult to use for this task you may use another more appropriate toy. Outline your experiment below.
