Task Summary
For this assessment, you need to do some research on the communication style required to work with clients who present with or discover during counselling sessions memories of sexual abuse in their childhood. You then need to provide an outline of the debate surrounding the repression and recovery of such traumatic memories and a description of communication styles that hold a neutral space, therapeutic interventions that neither assists in creating false memories nor negates the clients’ right to explore such memories and its underlying experiences.

Context
This task tests your ability to research at a Master’s level controversial issues in psychotherapy and counselling, and in this assessment specifically issues around effective therapeutic communication with clients presenting memories of sexual abuse.

Task Instructions
“The issues surrounding repressed, recovered, or false memories have sparked one of the greatest controversies in the mental health profession in the twentieth century. We review evidence concerning the existence of the repression and recovery of autobiographical memories of traumatic events and research on the development of false autobiographical memories, how specific therapeutic procedures can lead to false memories, and individual vulnerability to resisting false memories. These findings have implications for therapeutic practice, for forensic practice, for research and training in psychology, and for public policy”.

This assessment includes three tasks:
Outline where the so-called false memory debate has taken us up to this point and the key arguments for and against the existence of false and true memories. Make sure that your research is not limited to conventional psychology texts but also includes the views of neuroscience and body-centred psychotherapy.

Describe the ‘communication style’ you would use to hold a neutral ground in a sense that you are able to support clients in exploring these memories and their consequences on adult life without creating false memories.

Reflect in your own position and biases relating to this controversial topic and on how the communication style described above can serve you in your future practice.
