Critically Appraised Topics (CATs) are proposed as an effective and valuable tool to enable health professionals to
influence evidence-based decisions about patient care. CATs are short structured summaries of studies, containing
all the information necessary regarding the validity, results and usefulness of a study. These summaries can then
be made available as a resource for others to guide clinical decisions in a variety of ways.
The aim of this assignment is for you to demonstrate knowledge and skills in producing a CAT, to consider the
findings from the CAT within the broader evidence related to the topic, and to consider how the findings might be
applied to practice.
The aim of the audio-visual presentation is to demonstrate your ability to communicate your CAT using lay
terminology. Your primary objective is to provide clear, concise and correct information that answers a clinical
question to a colleague (for example, your CAT should be presented as if you are presenting this information as
part of an in-service or as a clinical discussion to a peer/colleague).
