Motivational Interview and Behaviour Change Intervention Management Assignment Help

Assignment Task

Introduction

  • Most of you will work directly one-on-one with clients at some point in your career. It is likely your client(s) may need to or want to change a behaviour. Working on changing a client’s behaviour can be challenging, as there are many barriers to changing behaviour. In this assignment, you will interview a client who may need/want to engage in a particular health behaviour and design an intervention to support them in being successful. This activity is very applied, whereby you will be applying theoretical knowledge learned through lectures and tutorials to a real-life application.
  • Instructions:
  • In this assignment, you are required to conduct a motivational interview with a potential client, and design a behaviour change intervention for that client where you apply a behaviour change theory and evidence-based strategies to support your client in changing a health behaviour.
  • Find a ‘CLIENT’ (friend, family member, classmate) who wants to change a health behaviour. This could be starting, stopping, increasing, or decreasing engagement in a behaviour to become healthier.
  • Examples include (but are not limited to): start/increase exercising/walking, stop smoking, increase sleep duration, increase water consumption, start/increase use of active transportation, increase/start flossing, diet/food intake (decrease sugar/butter intake, increase fruit/vegetable consumption, reduce fizzy drink intake, etc.), reduce alcohol intake, among others.
  • If you are unsure whether a behaviour qualifies, please ask your tutor/course coordinator via the Dialogue communication tool on learnonline.
  • INTERVIEW this ‘client’, and record your interview, making sure you incorporate the four principles of motivational interviewing discussed in class and readings (i.e., express empathy, develop discrepancy, roll with the resistance, and encourage self-efficacy).
  • The interview should record both audio and visual of the client & yourself (the interviewer)
  • You need to have your client sign a consent form for being recorded for study purposes (see learnonline site for the consent form).
  • Upload the consent form and the recorded interview to the e-portfolio site (discussed in tutorials)
  • DESIGN an intervention based on ONE health behaviour theory listed below (using the core constructs of that theory). On the e-portfolio website, in 1300 words or less, describe the core aspects of your intervention that are designed to change your client’s behaviour.
  • DO NOT define the constructs from the theory.
  • Describe how you plan to target ALL of the constructs from ONE theory; this is where you practically apply your knowledge of theory.
  • Provide EVIDENCE OF RESEARCH that supports the use of the behavioural strategies you have incorporated into your behaviour change intervention.
  • Find research articles that show either: (a) the strategies you implemented have been effective in past interventions, or (b) targeting those constructs within the theory you utilised has shown success.
  • Guideline: you should have enough evidence to convince the reader your strategies will be effective (1-2 references for the entire assignment is not enough!)

  • Approved Models/Theories to Use to Guide your Intervention:
  • Health Belief Model
  • Theory of Planned Behaviour
  • Transtheoretical Model
  • Self-Efficacy Model
  • Self-Determination Theory
  • Students will be assessed on the following:
  • Appropriate application of a counselling technique (motivational interviewing) and use of behaviour change theory (behavioural modification strategies)
  • Integration and application of knowledge from the course
  • Clarity of writing and expression of ideas
  • See marking key for guidance (posted on the learnonline course page).
  • As per School Policy, late assignments will be penalised with a deduction of 10% per day (or part thereof, including weekends) for assignments submitted late and without an approved extension.
  • Extensions will be granted in the case of unexpected or unforeseen circumstances and may require variation in assessment design (as per the UniSA Assessment Policy and Procedures Manual). Feedback and grades will be posted on learnonline within 3 weeks of submission date.
  • Due Date: Monday 11th October @ 12pm (noon), submitted via learnonline.
  • Layout: All assignments are to be submitted via learnonline, using the e-Portfolio template provided (instructions provided on learnonline & will be guided in tutorials).
  • Format: The motivational interview should last between 4-6 minutes in duration, and the intervention design word limit is 1300 words (excluding the reference list, but includes all in-text writing such as headings, sub-headings, and in-text references). Students exceeding this time limit or word count will be penalised by staff not watching, reading nor marking the additional components.
  • The assignment should be written in report form, using paragraphs and under the following sub-headings:
  • Motivational Interview: upload the consent form and interview video (audio and visual recording) to this section (4-6 minutes in duration; 6 minutes maximum).
  • Client Overview: Discuss your client’s ultimate goal for behaviour change (what behaviour do they want to change) and how their motivation, personality, environmental barriers, and/or other relevant course content (e.g., anxiety, social norms, etc.) might impact your clients’ ability to change.
  • Intervention Design: Using one behaviour change theory or model, describe the strategies you would implement by identifying how you will target each construct within that theory to change your client’s behaviour. Provide research evidence from the literature which supports the behavioural strategies that you have designed for implementation.
  • References: Include a list of references used in-text, according to UniSA Harvard Referencing style.
  • **Note: The 1300-word limit includes the client overview and intervention design sections**
  • DON’T FORGET TO SUBMIT YOUR E-PORTFOLIO VIA LEARNONLINE. Simply finishing your e-portfolio site does not submit it automatically. You need to go onto learnonline to submit your e-portfolio page.
