Assignment Task
Task
•Questions will refer to a case. The case will be provided on November 1, so you have plenty of time to read the case and get familiar with the details.
•You will be asked to apply material from the subject (lectures, assigned readings, and workshops from Week 1 to Week 12) to the case.
Examples of What You Might See
•Examples of how questions may be structured:
–“Drawing on concepts from the assigned readings and class sessions, describe the organisation’s approach to ____. Use examples from the case to justify your answer. Was the organisation’s approach appropriate? Why or why not?”
–“Imagine that ____ happened after the case. Use concepts from the assigned readings and class sessions to discuss whether and how the organisation should change its HRM practices. If you were an HR manager at the organisation, what kinds of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs) would you need to perform your job in that new environment?”
•Notice the need to apply concepts from the subject to the case. You will need to demonstrate your understanding of the concepts (through a brief definition or illustration), but most of your answer should be dedicated to applying the concepts to the organisation/case/situation.
•While questions will refer to the case, they may also:
–introduce hypothetical situations (e.g., “Imagine if the case went like this… What would your recommendation be?”), and/or
–ask you to do some self-reflection (e.g., “Considering your own strengths and weaknesses, what KSAOs would you need to develop in order to succeed in this organisation?”)
•You may be asked to provide an analysis and/or recommendation, but you MUST demonstrate your knowledge by explaining the theory behind it and support it with examples from the case.
Examples of What You Might See
•For example, if you are asked to use Hofstede’s cultural dimensions to describe the potential changes a company might make to its HRM practices when expanding to a particular country, an excerpt from a bad and good answer, respectively, might read something like…
–NOT-SO-GOOD ANSWER: “The company has expanded to a country where power distance is higher, collectivism is higher, uncertainty avoidance is about the same, masculinity-femininity is higher, and long-term orientation is lower. They should train their expatriates and host country nationals for the subsidiary to deal with these cultural differences.”
–GOOD ANSWER: “While there are a number of cultural differences at play, one of the most significant challenges that this company will likely face in its expansion is dealing with higher power distance. Power distance refers to ___. In expanding to a country with high power distance, it is important to understand that host country national (HCN) employees in the new subsidiary might not be as accustomed to participative decision-making as employees in the parent country are. If the company sends expatriate managers to set up and initially lead the new subsidiary, manager training may be necessary to familiarise them with a more top-down decision-making approach and alternative ways to obtain employee input. Another important cultural difference to consider is …”
Exam Tips
•Read the exam carefully.
–Follow the instructions and make sure you understand the questions.
–ANSWER THE QUESTION: Think about what the question asks you to do, then do it. Don’t answer a related question (or the question you want to answer). Answer the question that is there!
•You want to talk like an expert who has taken this subject. This means using key theories and terminologies from the lectures and readings.
–Be as specific as possible.
–We are interested in how you use the frameworks and terminologies in analysing the scenario and answering the questions.
–Do not simply describe or summarise and leave it up to your marker to interpret what you mean.
–And do not casually ‘throw around’ terms in a superficial way. Make sure you demonstrate that you understand what you are talking about. If you are using terms to make substantial comparisons or using terms with illustrative examples, you are probably demonstrating your understanding. However, if in doubt, you can provide a quick definition of the term to show the marker that you know what it means.
