The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to give you practice in locating scholarly sources (journals, periodicals, books, etc) and analyzing and evaluating them not only for their quality but for their relevance to your research question as well. The process of writing an annotated bibliography will help you conceptualize secondary sources as evidence, weed out irrelevant information, and help you strategically turn secondary sources into evidence to support your argument(s). After you have carefully selected a minimum of 3 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources to use in your research paper, you will write an annotation (short paragraph) for each one. An annotated bibliography is more than a brief summary of a secondary source; it analyzes and evaluates the information presented in the text and explains how that information can be used to address some aspect of your research question. Read your sources with a critical eye: what is the purpose of the work? what type of audience is the work is written toward? what is its relevance to your topic? are there any unique or special features?
Examine the strengths and weaknesses of the text, as well as describing how the text is an important source of information to the research you are conducting. In other words, if a reader were exploring the same topic as you, is this material useful and why?
